The Optimal Bicycle Chain Lock

On a recent trip to Amsterdam I discovered these amazing bicycle chain locks. I have yet to encounter a more superlative design. These locks were by far the most popular in the 'City of Bikes' where bike theft is such a problem. The chain and locking mechanism are products of the renowed Italian security chain manufacturer Weissenfels.

The locks are currently on order from Italy and should be arriving in canada in mid May.

Review:

Chain locks are able to work where u locks fail: lamp posts, trees. You can vary the length to keep your bike from falling down.
It's easy to lock wheel up to assembly. (U locks only work at one point on the frame and sometimes don't work on funny frames.)

It is easy to carry: wrap around handle bar, seat post. around waist, neck, flexible for easy storage in bags.

Chain Locks are harder to cut through because they don't stay still. can't be pryed or torqued.

In comparisson to other chain locks, the inline lock design doesn't flap around when riding making it easier to stow. The dual pin locking mechanism makes it much easier to user since there is less to hold together while locking. You can also lock anywhere on the chain (many locks are limited to securing only the extreme ends of the chain.). This allows you to change the length for different situations. When the key is in the unlocked position, it will not release the key making it more foolproof, but also allows the key to be stowed in the lock while riding. I have found this to be particulary useful when making quick trips in the city for I can hang the lock around my neck and use it to store my large bunch of keys while riding.

The double case hardned steel easily resists hack saws and bolt cutters (I have tried!). The 7mm chain is much lighter than 11mm chains used on other chain locks. 7mm chains are comparable in security to the best U locks. Obviously they are Not quite as strong as the jumbo 11mm variety used in the Kryptonite New York chain locks, but it provides the necessary security at 2/3 the weight. To me it make a lot of sense to not to carry such heavy hardware when it's not needed.

The Custom designed sheath protects your bike. It's easy to retract for choking up on the chain. removable for washing, remains supple in the dead of winter and holds little water for those rainy days. Custom colours available soon to match your bike.

The most popular lock in Amsterdam 'city of bikes'. Choice of MAC bikes #1 bike rental company in holland.

I tested throroughly during the winter in toronto. Never any problems.
